Are We About to Enter Another AI Winter?

This isn’t your typical “AI is the future” story. This is about how (when everyone was throwing money and excitement at AI like it was the next gold rush) things suddenly went cold. These “AI winters” are like the seasons that hit tech trends: the hype goes sky-high, then everything collapses. And it’s happened a lot.

Back in the early days, AI was like a glimpse of magic. Imagine it – computers that could understand languages, translate texts instantly, and maybe even think a little like humans. Scientists were psyched, investors were in a frenzy, and researchers were coming up with big, bold predictions. It was the Cold War era, and everyone in the US was laser-focused on one thing: outsmarting the USSR. If computers could help crack codes or translate scientific reports, it felt like the world was changing. I wouldn’t be surprised if China and the CIA are working against each other, much like it was with the USSR.

Enter the famous 1966 ALPAC report. After spending millions, the US government wanted to know if machine translation was actually better than just hiring human translators. The computers were painfully slow, made bizarre errors, and had such a limited vocabulary that they could only understand the tiniest slivers of language. The government, feeling a bit duped, pulled the plug. Researchers watched their funding disappear, and careers went down the drain.

In the 1970s, AI faced a double blow. DARPA, the primary agency funding ambitious AI initiatives, decided to cut back on ‘just-for-fun’ science. They wanted results that would make an immediate impact on military technology. As a result, they stopped funding experimental AI projects and instead focused on initiatives that could demonstrate real-world value quickly, such as autonomous vehicles and battlefield software. Unfortunately, the tank project, for instance, did not succeed.

Researchers like Hans Moravec admitted that they’d over-promised on what AI could actually do. It was almost like they couldn’t help it; every proposal had to be more ambitious than the last, even if it stretched the truth. The idea was that if DARPA funded wild projects, they’d eventually stumble upon something groundbreaking. But the well ran dry, and many promising projects were left unfinished. Moravec described it as a “lesson” for researchers – a harsh one.

Fast forward to the ‘80s, and AI made a comeback with expert systems. These were programs that could “think” in specific, narrow ways – like diagnosing illnesses or figuring out the best ways to manufacture products. Corporations were all-in, and LISP machines – specialized computers for AI – were popping up everywhere. It looked like a tech revolution! Then, in 1987, LISP machines were suddenly out of the game. Regular workstations like those by Sun Microsystems became powerful and much cheaper. Overnight, the market for LISP machines collapsed, and the once-hot expert systems faded away. It was another cold front – a second AI winter.

So why did these AI winters happen? It wasn’t just about technology falling short. It was also about people’s expectations running too high. AI researchers promised groundbreaking advances, and investors believed them. They thought AI would bring us to the future faster than it could actually deliver. So, when the tech didn’t live up to the hype, funding dried up, researchers scrambled, and the field went dark. It was a harsh cycle – one of excitement, disappointment, and fallout.

By the late ‘90s, AI started making a comeback. This time, it wasn’t in flashy projects but in quiet, practical applications. AI was embedded in bigger systems – things like data analytics and web search engines. We didn’t call it AI anymore, though. Terms like “machine learning” and “intelligent systems” were used instead. This rebranding helped avoid the “AI stigma,” and little by little, AI integrated into things we use every day. In a way, AI hid in plain sight – it worked better in the background than it did with all the hype.

And here we are today. AI’s everywhere – from your smartphone to your car to your home speaker. Huge advances in machine learning have unlocked potential we only dreamed of in the ‘80s. The success of deep learning, image recognition, and natural language processing (hello, ChatGPT!) has made AI more powerful than ever. We’re living in an AI spring – the opposite of winter – and the excitement is through the roof.

Some experts think we might be setting ourselves up for another winter. AI promises are getting pretty big again. We’re expecting AI to do everything – from driving cars to diagnosing diseases to replacing jobs. The hype is reminiscent of the 1980s – but can AI live up to it all? Tech has come a long way, but there are still limits, and solving one big problem often opens up a new set of challenges.

Will we see another AI winter? Maybe, maybe not. But if history has taught us anything, it’s that tech trends are like waves. They rise, they crash, and they rise again. Maybe the best way forward isn’t to ride the hype but to keep steady. AI might have faced its share of winters, but it’s survived them all. And that says something about the resilience of this tech. It might go cold, but AI never truly dies.
