Please don’t confuse a dead role with a dead employee.

I think the most valuable person characteristic is agency.

This type of employee doesn’t wait for tasks. If they see what matters, they take ownership of it, and nobody has to manage them into it. And it’s so damn valuable - and pretty rare.

It’s more like a skill that founders need when they’re running a business.

At the same time, people who exist in a company only because of an old system - who know all the intricate details of that system and do their best to protect that knowledge - eventually will be replaced. They become useless once the system disappears.

So before cutting anyone, just ask yourself: if their role disappears, would you be willing to find them a new role?
