Amazon’s Weekly Business Review and smarter data-driven decisions

It's a super interesting article about Amazon’s Weekly Business Review (WBR) and how businesses can use data to make smarter decisions.

Amazon leadership team meets every single week to review 400-500 key metrics in just 60 minutes. That might sound intense, but it’s what keeps them ahead of the curve.

Imagine being able to spot a dip in customer satisfaction or a rise in shipping delays before they become big problems. That’s exactly what Amazon’s WBR does - it acts as an early warning system that helps the company stay proactive instead of reactive.

But here’s the part that really stuck with me: Amazon doesn’t just look at outcome-based numbers (like revenue or conversion rates). Instead, they focus heavily on input metrics - the things they can actually control. For example, instead of just tracking sales, they’ll look at things like website speed, product availability, or how quickly customer service responds. The idea is simple: control the inputs, and the outputs will take care of themselves.

The article also provides a great example with a fictional eCommerce store, Surfalytics. Here’s how they structured their WBR:

  • Conversion Rate (Output) dropped from 3% to 2.5%. Why? Turns out, website load time increased and a few key products were out of stock. Fixing those inputs could help bring the numbers back up.
  • Traffic (Input) increased 15% thanks to a Google Ads campaign. A good sign that marketing is working!
  • Product Availability (Input) was only 80%—which means 20% of high-demand products were unavailable. A major red flag that needs immediate action.
  • Operational Efficiency (Input) saw a slowdown in order fulfillment. Catching it early helps the team avoid bigger customer service issues down the line. This approach makes so much sense—by regularly reviewing these key areas, you can adjust and improve before small issues turn into major problems.
