Why KPIs Get Hacked and Miss the Real Problem

Ever noticed how KPIs, no matter how well-intended, tend to get "hacked"? People find ways to hit the numbers - sometimes intentionally, sometimes without even realizing it. It’s human nature. We see a goal, and our brains go, “How can I make this easier?”

But here’s the catch - hitting a KPI doesn’t always mean you’re solving the actual problem. Think about it: maybe sales are up because of heavy discounts, but profit margins are tanking. Or support tickets are resolved faster, but customer satisfaction is dropping.

That’s why you can’t just take KPIs at face value. Look at the bigger picture. Are the numbers driving real results, or are people just working around the system? Pay attention to those creative shortcuts - they’re sneaky, and they can throw you off course if you’re not careful.

At the end of the day, KPIs are a tool, not the goal. Keep asking, “Are we really fixing the right problem?” That’s where the magic happens.
