AI Index 2025: efficiency drives progress and global shift

The 2025 AI Index Report is out (published by Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence).

AI performance is still improving fast - big jumps on hard benchmarks, stronger agents, better video, lower costs. A quiet but important shift - efficiency, not just scale, is now driving progress.

Nearly 80% of organizations now use AI, and research consistently shows productivity gains, especially for less experienced workers.

The US still leads in producing top AI models, but China has closed most of the quality gap in just a year. At the same time, serious AI development is becoming global.

Governments are currently moving faster than industry on regulation and governance.

Many Asian countries are strongly optimistic about AI, while skepticism remains high in the US and parts of Europe.
