Why GenAI coding tools help me but still need careful review

I just finished reading "Why Generative AI Coding Tools and Agents Do Not Work For Me".

As someone who builds SaaS apps and juggles multiple projects, I do use AI to speed up parts of my work. And I love that it lets me move faster, especially when I’m spinning up something new, like a landing page or API integration. It’s like having an extra set of hands. But the speed only helps if I stay very mindful of quality.

And that’s exactly what this article gets right. The author explains how reviewing AI-generated code can sometimes take just as long as writing it from scratch. I’ve had moments where the AI-generated code "looked fine", but debugging it later turned into a time sink. Like he says, I’m the one responsible for what ships. And when I’m building apps that deal with customer data, feedback, or payment systems, there’s zero room for carelessness.

One part I particularly appreciated was his take on the intern analogy. He argues that using AI is like working with an intern who never learns. Tools like Cursor help here. I’ve been using Cursor to set up project-specific "rules" that the AI starts to follow. At first, it’s clunky - just like onboarding a junior dev. But over time, you build a base of rules and context that really helps. Sometimes I still need to say, "Remember this rule @-the-rule." But it does get better. It’s not Day 1 forever.

So, do GenAI tools "work"? For me, the answer is: YES. They’re incredibly useful - especially when I’m wearing all the hats. But I use them with care. I keep reviews tight. I build in feedback loops, and I never assume the AI will catch what I don’t.

The article reminded me that there’s no black-and-white answer. It’s not "AI good" or "AI bad". It’s about how you use it, and what you’re willing to trade for speed. For my workflow - across multiple apps, platforms, and user types - I’ve learned to let AI assist, but not replace my judgment.
