AI Replaces Managers: A New Coordination Layer

Hot take - what if we actually don't need managers now?

I came across a quite interesting article from Jack Dorsey where he said that we don't need hierarchy because we need it for information routing. Humans can only manage up to 8 relationships effectively, thus we built layers upon layers. To effectively move context from one human to another.

Organizations slow down because of how information flows, not because people are bad (well, sometimes that too) or strategy is wrong, but because:

context moves too slowly decisions wait in queues alignment is expensive

I'm sure you feel that especially when growing your team.

... and then suddenly at some point:

every fix needs a meeting every meeting needs another meeting every action needs allignment or confirmation everything becomes so irritatingly slow

So while most companies use AI as a copilot for everyone, Jack REPLACES the coordination layer itself.

Instead of managers passing context around, he builds system that

1️⃣ knows what’s happening across the company 2️⃣ sees what’s blocked 3️⃣ understands priorities 4️⃣ updates continuously

It's a living map of the company and since everything is already digitalized (code, tickets, chats, decisions), AI can actually maintain it.

If that works, you don't need:

status meetings alignment meetings half of middle management

Not because people are useless, but because their main job (routing info) disappears ‼️

They reduce everything to 3 roles:

Individual Contributors (IC) -> build stuff Directly Responsible Individuals (DRI) -> own problems Player-coaches -> mentor + build

The intelligence lives in the system and handles coordination, memory, context. Humans handle ambiguity, taste, judgment.

Coordination was the job. AI takes the job.
