How Liquid Death Uses Humor to Build a Brand Moat

Most founders obsess over product but Liquid Death's Mike Cessario started by assuming his product was a commodity.

Water is water 🤷‍♂️ He knew that. So he asked: if the product doesn't win, how does the brand win?

His answer was "humor".

Well, not like a fun brand, but produced at entertainment company scale. There's a reason this moat exists and Coke can't cross it:

big brands can buy any athlete they want they can outspend you on every conventional channel but ... funny dies in approval chains

Ben Stiller did a Pepsi campaign. Everything funny got killed before it ran. You can't buy genuine comedy with a corporate review process.

So Liquid Death made a $1.5k video that got 3M views. Then they made a Super Bowl ad for $300k, produced internally, while others paid millions for that. Industry average is multiples of that.

The product is the can but the business is the audience.

Red Bull figured this out with action sports and Liquid Death copied the model, swapped in humor, and ran.

Software people underestimate this - in SaaS, shipping to a thousand customers and shipping to a million customers is mostly an infra problem.

In beverages, every new shelf is a sales problem you solve one distributor at a time.

Brand gets people to reach for the can. Distribution determines whether the can is there.
