What Anthropic’s Deep Dive Reveals About Claude

I've just finished reading Anthropic’s latest deep dive. It’s one of the most fascinating and useful articles I’ve read in a while if you're even a little curious about how these large language models (LLMs) actually work. While that might sound a bit academic, it’s surprisingly readable and filled with insights about what’s going on under the hood.

1️⃣ Claude thinks in a universal language There’s compelling evidence that Claude doesn't just switch between English, French, or Chinese as apps do. Instead, it uses a shared conceptual space - a kind of language of thought - before translating into human language.

2️⃣ It plans rhymes ahead of time In one experiment, researchers asked Claude to complete a poem. The assumption was that Claude was picking words one-by-one without much foresight. But nope - turns out, it actually brainstorms rhyming words before it starts writing the line. It’s like it sees several moves ahead, like a chess player lining up strategy.

3️⃣ It can do mental math but in its own way Claude wasn’t explicitly trained to do math, and yet it handles addition pretty well. Turns out, it uses multiple internal "paths" at once - one for rough estimates, another for getting precise digits. It’s not mimicking our school-taught method - it’s inventing its own.

4️⃣ It sometimes fakes its reasoning This part 🤯. When Claude is confident, its reasoning chain is solid. But when it’s unsure or nudged in the wrong direction, it sometimes retroactively invents a chain of logic to justify an answer. It’s not just wrong- it’s confidently wrong. The researchers literally caught it "BSing" as they put it.
