You Don’t Need a Co-Founder: Equity, Hiring, and AI

No, you don't need a co-founder.

Elad Gil invests in SpaceX, OpenAI, Stripe. He's raising $3B as a solo GP. At a recent fireside chat he said what solo founders already know but rarely hear from investors: the "you need a co-founder" rule is mostly wrong.

Dell, Bezos, Ellison, all built alone. Gates went effectively solo when Allen left. Jobs was the dominant force from day one.

"Over and over, it was either unequal or solo for many of the biggest things."

The conventional wisdom was never data. It was investor comfort dressed up as advice.

There's a second thing the co-founder split costs you that people don't talk about - when you start with 100% of the cap table, you can use equity to hire people who would otherwise start their own thing.

A co-founder split before you've written a line of code doesn't just cost equity. It costs your ability to make early hires feel like founders, because your grants still have to fit inside the remaining half.

‼️ The solo founders winning right now are treating that extra equity as a recruiting weapon.

And in an AI moment, where one engineer with the right tools can do what five did three years ago, that equation tilts even further. You need fewer people. The people you do need are better. And you can afford to make them feel it.

The advice to get a co-founder was about what made investors comfortable approving a term sheet ... and that's shifting.

Co-founders also come with the things nobody puts in the pitch deck:

equity disputes that surface 18 months in one person scaling, one person not friendship turning into a liability firing your co-founder/being fired by them

One founder I know put it plainly: I realized I was giving away 50% of my equity to someone I couldn't fire, just to argue with them.

AI can be one for you - it takes 0% equity, doesn't argue about the roadmap, and is available at 2am without a calendar invite. No co-founder means no six-month disagreement about whether to pivot. No splitting decisions between two people with different risk tolerances. No "we need to align on this" when you already know what to do.

Co-founders were a workaround for limits that no longer exist.
