How AI Is Helping Design Better Physics Experiments

I just came across an article that dives into how AI is starting to design experimental setups in physics that never would’ve imagined.

It describes an example of LIGO (the gravitational-wave detector). After decades of fine-tuning by top scientists, AI jumped in and found a way to improve its sensitivity by 10-15%. The AI proposed adding an extra 3-kilometer ring and it turns out, it was applying obscure theoretical principles that hadn’t been tested before.

Another example - physicists are using AI not just for designing experiments, but also for analyzing complex data. Models have been able to spot hidden symmetries in particle collider data and even come up with better equations to describe dark matter clumping.

One of the researchers said working with AI at this stage feels like "teaching a child how to speak." The AI can spot patterns and suggest solutions, but humans are still doing a lot of the interpretation and clean-up work.
