Shopify’s AI memo signals a new company standard

Just read an internal memo from Shopify’s CEO. Here are a few things I found interesting:

0️⃣ Before hiring, ask: can AI help? Don’t default to headcount. First, explore whether an AI tool or workflow could fill the gap. It's a mindset shift - and a powerful one.

1️⃣ AI is now expected, not optional. At Shopify, knowing how to use AI in your daily work is no longer a bonus - it’s required.

2️⃣ Prototyping = AI-powered. Every new project should involve AI from the start. It’s not about perfection - it’s about accelerating learning and building smarter, faster.

3️⃣ Prompting is a real skill. Writing a prompt isn’t enough. You need to guide AI with context, tweak it, and learn how to get useful output. It’s a craft.

4️⃣ AI performance will be measured. Expect questions about how you're using AI in peer and performance reviews. It’s becoming a core competency.

5️⃣ Learn on your own, share as a team. AI growth is self-directed, but collaboration is encouraged.

This feels like a wave that's about to hit every company in the next year or two.
