How AI data centers are stressing the power grid

Just read an eye-opener about how AI data centers are quietly messing with the power grid. Turns out, those massive hubs fueling AI aren't just power-hungry - they’re creating "bad harmonics" that distort electricity flowing into homes. Think of it like turning the volume up too high on a speaker - everything gets a little ... off. These distortions can fry appliances or even spark electrical fires. Most of this happens near major data centers, like in Northern Virginia, aka “data center alley.”

Why does this matter? Because AI’s energy demand is skyrocketing, and the aging grid isn’t ready. I think that's the reason why Google is investing in small modular reactors (SMRs) to power its global data centers. Small nuclear stations near data centers might be the future. They’re clean, stable, and could power these centers without wrecking the rest of the grid. It feels like we’re heading that way sooner than we think. What do you think?
