How William Shockley’s Ego Helped Create Silicon Valley

Shockley’s genius created the tech - his ego created Silicon Valley. Funny how that works.

William Shockley was brilliant but hard to like. He helped invent the transistor, a key piece of tech we use every day. His temper and lack of empathy made him a nightmare to work with. At Bell Labs, his team made big breakthroughs, but they often left him out of the spotlight.

Later, he started his own company, Shockley Semiconductor. His leadership style - pushed 8 of his best employees to quit. Those 8 went on to form Fairchild Semiconductor, which laid the foundation for Silicon Valley. Shockley’s company didn’t survive long, and his personal life wasn’t much better. Despite all that, his work changed the world forever.
