AI Era Startup Defensibility: Features Get Cloned

I read a piece recently - a startup raised $4M, shipped a polished product, got a TechCrunch article.

☠️ in 11 months

Not because the product was bad but because three competitors built the same thing in six weeks. One of them was free.

Welcome to the AI era.

Building is no longer the hard part.

What used to take a team of 8 engineers and four months can now be prototyped by one person over a weekend.

Great if you like building. Terrible if the build is your entire business.

If someone with a Claude subscription and a credit card can recreate your product… what exactly are you selling? Most startups today are basically features waiting to be absorbed.

Defensibility isn’t a wall - it’s something that compounds.

1️⃣ Data that improves with every user 2️⃣ Trust inside critical infrastructure 3️⃣ Regulatory licenses and permissions 4️⃣ Distribution you don’t rent 5️⃣ Community around the product 6️⃣ Deep liquidity or capital 7️⃣ Physical infrastructure

Have you noticed that? None of these are built in a weekend..

If a team with $50M cloned your product tomorrow, what could they not replicate in three years?

If the answer is nothing… you’re probably building a feature. Not a company.

In a world where AI compresses time ... the only things that survive are the ones that compound.
