Why Tests and Docs Are the New Moat

The moat is not code - it’s the spec you can execute.

What if tests and documentation are now more valuable than the code itself?

Ten years ago the hard part was writing the thing/logic/engine. Now you can vibe code half of it in an afternoon. LLMs spit out code like crazy.

But what about tests?

Tests are intent. Tests are boundaries. Tests are the real contract.

That is way harder to fake (if written correctly).

Docs are similar. Clean API surface. Clear behavior. Edge cases written down. That’s basically a cloning manual in 2026. You document well and someone else can rebuild your whole stack on a cleaner base without a legacy baggage.

The repo is now just a byproduct. The real asset sits in /tests and /docs.

It feels backwards. Before, code was the engine and docs were the manual. Now code is replaceable parts and tests are the engine blueprint.

Code can be regenerated. It’s a commodity now. Contracts can’t be guessed. Behavior is expensive knowledge.

Tests/docs might be the only things that actually matters.
