Helped Heard Hugged: Listening Before Solving

I’ve always been a “solution” person.

If you came to me with a problem, I’d roll up my sleeves and dive in - What’s the root cause? How can we fix it? Let’s make a plan. That’s how I thought care worked. Help = solving, right?

Over time, I’ve noticed something different. Most people don’t actually want a solution. They already know what they should do - or at least have a good idea. What they’re really looking for is someone to listen. Just... listen. No fixing. No step-by-step plan. Just presence.

That’s been hard for me to wrap my head around. But the more I paid attention, the clearer it got.

That’s where the idea of HHH hit me: Helped, Heard, Hugged. It sounds simple. But it shifted how I approach people.

  1. Helped – Sometimes, of course, they want advice.
  2. Heard – More often, they just need to let it out.
  3. Hugged – And sometimes, no words - just being there - is the real support.

Now I’m rewiring myself to ask the question: "Are you looking for a solution, or just someone to hear you out?"

Sometimes it means just being quiet.
