Sam Altman on AGI, ChatGPT, and chaotic leadership

Just read Sam Altman's reflections - it’s full of insight.

0️⃣ ‼️ Sam believes we now know how to build AGI. In his view, 2025 might be the year AI agents start working alongside us.

1️⃣ In 2022, OpenAI was still this quiet research lab, and the now-world-famous ChatGPT was just a side project called "Chat with GPT-3.5" Sam admits they weren’t even good at naming things back.

I love how he described the launch as a tipping point they didn’t see coming. It wasn’t part of some master plan.

2️⃣ One minute you’re leading one of the most talked-about companies on earth, and the next, you’re getting fired via a surprise video call in a hotel room and he shares how chaotic and surreal it was.

3️⃣ He doesn’t pretend it’s all been fun. In fact, he says the last two years have been the best and worst of his life; late nights, constant pressure, moments of total burnout.

4️⃣ They never planned to build a product company. They thought they’d stay in the research zone. But the world had other plans. This is a good reminder for any founder: sometimes the market pulls you somewhere unexpected, and you either adapt or get left behind.

This post is more than just a status update from the CEO of a major AI company. It reminded me that:

  • Growth doesn’t come without chaos (see my recent blog post about chaos)
  • Leadership means learning as you go ... sometimes very painfully
  • Vision evolves
  • You need people around you who can hold steady when things fall apart
