AI’s Horseless Carriage Phase and What Comes Next

I just read an interesting article on how we interact with new technology - especially AI. It explores skeuomorphism, where early tech mimics what came before, like a 19th-century car designed to look like a horse.

AI today follows the same pattern, modeled after human roles - assistants, writers, developers—but this limits its potential. Instead of asking how AI can do human jobs, we should explore what AI can do uniquely. “AI-native” applications, which scale expert knowledge & consensus, and summarize scientific agreement, show AI’s true potential. No-code tools and AI music generators lower barriers to creativity, expanding what we can do.

Some trends, like AI “friends,” feel less compelling since real friendships thrive on individuality. We’re still in the "horseless carriage" phase of AI -trying to fit it into old frameworks. The real breakthroughs will come when we stop imitating ourselves and start imagining what AI can truly do.
