Optimizing for Different Risk Levels in Automation

Not so long ago, I had an interesting discussion with a customer.

We were both looking at the exact same process in his company, but:

The customer saw that the process is flexible, it was built a long time ago, and he fully trusts it. The system works and delivers results for him.

I saw a dependency on a specific person who’s been working there for a long time. And once he leaves the company, it could become a big problem. I also noticed that the information is spread across WhatsApp, emails, and employees’ memories.

Neither view was wrong, but... if you look closer, we were “optimizing” for different risk levels.

I think this happens a lot in consulting and automation—before you can improve a process or system, you first need to figure out what the customer is protecting.

What looks like chaos from the outside is control from the inside.
