Why Tech and Non-Tech People See AI So Differently

I’m honestly shocked by how differently tech people and normal people see AI right now.

It’s more like we’re living in parallel universes.

In tech, people are already confused by how fast things are changing and how the world is changing incredibly fast, with industries being disrupted one by one. Developers ship code while AFK. Marketers test hundreds of ads at once. Designers turn prompts into clickable apps before the first alignment call.

When you see that every day, it changes how you think: you see teams/products/own excuses differently.

But then I talk to people who are not close to this stuff, and I still hear:

Yeah, but what really changed? AI is mostly hype Nothing big happened since the smartphone

… and I think I understand why they think that

The smartphone was easy to use - you could hold it in your hand. The screen changed, your photos changed, your maps changed, and your habits changed, too, etc.

You could point at it and say: THIS is the future.

AI doesn’t arrive like that.

There’s no single object and no clean before-and-after moment:

A report takes a couple of minutes instead of 3 hours A prototype takes a weekend instead of a quarter A small team suddenly does work that used to require a department

Ray Kurzweil once said we tend to overestimate what can happen in the short term and underestimate what can happen in the long term.

That’s exactly what this feels like - right now, people are looking for the big visible moment and not seeing it. So they assume nothing major is happening, but underneath ... the compounding is already in motion.

And that’s why the disconnect is so big.

AI changes the workflow and makes everything look boring - until one day you realize the ground has shifted under you and you didn’t notice. Now you’re playing a different game with worse odds.
