OpenAI study shows how people use ChatGPT in 2025

OpenAI published a study on how people globally have used ChatGPT from its launch (Nov 2022) through mid-2025. What I found interesting:

✨ By July 2025 there were ~700 million weekly active users on consumer plans, sending ~18 billion messages per week. That corresponds to about 10% of the world’s adult population.

✨Between mid-2024 and mid-2025, the number of messages grew by more than 5️⃣ times!

✨ Early users were disproportionately male. By mid-2025 active users are roughly balanced.

✨ Use in lower and middle-income countries has grown faster in recent times.

✨ In June 2024 about 53% of messages were non-work; by June 2025 that had grown to ~73%. Even among people who signed up earlier.

✨ The main conversation topic categories: Practical Guidance, Seeking Information, and Writing. They make up ~77–80% of usage.

✨ Technical help (e.g., programming) has declined in share among conversation topics. I’m not surprised - I mostly use Claude, and so do people I know.

✨ 49% of messages are Asking (seeking information or advice), ~40% Doing (requests to perform tasks: generate text, write code), ~11% Expressing (sharing feelings, reflections, etc.). Among work-related messages, Doing is more common (56%) than Asking.

✨ 18-25 users account for ~46% among self-reporting users. Older users tend to send more work-related messages proportionally. More educated users are more likely to use ChatGPT for work.

✨ Home/leisure, personal projects, self-improvement etc. are large and growing parts of usage.
